A Vegetarian at Slows BBQ

I headed downtown yesterday to pick up a birthday gift for my cousin and of course my boyfriend and my dad wanted to have Slows BBQ for lunch. I am fine with eating wherever but sometimes it can be challenging because I am a vegetarian, but I can usually find something to eat anywhere and be satisfied. This was only my second time eating at slows, the first time I got a rice and beans dish, but made the mistake of getting it without tomatoes which I found out yesterday because the girl next to me at the bar got it and it looked very delicious compared to the time I got it. Yesterday I decieded on the vegetarian chicken sandwich they have, which was pretty good.

I appreciate restaurants that specialize in meat dishes, such as their BBQ sandwiches, that also offers vegetarian options. They also have a variety of great sides such as waffle fries, mac and cheese, green beans, and cornbread. I could just go there and get the sides and be happy. I have not tried the mac and cheese yet but I want to next time I go. I also want to try the rice and beans dish again with the tomatoes because they seemed like it added a lot of flavor.

Most people that know Slows BBQ and have eaten there before absolutely love it, but rating restaurants from a vegetarian point of view is different. I really like that I can go there and know I can get something to eat and my boyfriend is happy that I can go there whenever he wants to.

After lunch I picked up some coffee for my cousin and Astro a couple doors down and then checked out this store called Citybird. They have a bunch of great Detroit small gifts. I ended up getting an adorable little tee for my dog!

Isn’t he the cutest?

I had a pretty successful little trip down to Detroit and I look forward to trying more options at Slows.

“Your dresses should be tight enough to show you’re a woman and loose enough to show you’re a lady.” -Edith Head

I really love this quote and I think some women should have this hanging in their room to see everyday when they’re getting dressed.

Too often do I see women with all body types dressing so inappropriately, and with just a little help they could look so much better. Some ideas are so simple but apparently some people just don’t get it.

So here are my tips for keeping it classy ladies

1. If you are showing off your legs with a short skirt or shorts keep it covered up on the top and vise versa. This one seems too easy but some women needed to be reminded of it. I would only say this one is Ok if you’re at the beach.

Here is a good example…..

She has a pair of short jean shorts and her shirt is totally appropriate and covered up and still looks chic and cute. Throw on some flippies for just walkig around or some heeled sandals like she has for a more dressed up look. Some statement jewelry would dress it up too.

Here is a bad example….

This isn’t horrible, I have seen worse, but I think she would look more polished if she had a top that covered her up more. It could be a basic black tee or lightweight sweater. A fun necklace would be cute with this outfit as well. She might want to tone down those wedges too while she’s at it before she breaks an ankle.

They do both have nice legs which helps. another tip I would have is….wear the appropriate short length for your size. I don’t think anyone should be wearing shorts or skirts short enough where we can see something inappropriate but I also think you should be wearing the right length for what size you might wear. My favorite shorts are the 5 inch chino shorts from J Crew. They are the perfect length for me and they look cute with flip flops and wedges for a night out.

check them out there…J Crew Chino Shorts

2. Empire waist looks good on everyone.

The empire waist is such a great go to silhouette for every body type. If you are plus size or size 4 it hits the body right at the right spot to hide any imperfections you might feel you have. It is also a great silhouette of you’re feeling bloated that day, you don’t have to worry about what your stomach looks like under there.

Here is a great example of a plus size model in an empire waist dress….

This woman looks amazing in this dress, I love it on her. The neckline is classy and the silhouette looks great on her.

This is also a great hemline for a beach dress…

It keeps the dress flowy and comfortable.

3. My next tip would be you don’t have to wear the smallest bathing suit out here you can find.

Look for a fun one piece as an alternative this summer, or a vintage inspired one. I usually try to find something different that no one else will have at the beach.

Here is a vintage inspired bathing suit that I own and I love…

The suit is so classy and different, I just love it, it fits me great too. There are so many fun bathing suits out there, one pieces and two pieces, so have fun with is, you don’t always have to have the itty bitty bikini every year.

4. ok my last tip is….please wear tights if you’re going to wear a short skirt or wool shorts in the winter.

This makes me so angry when there are so many fun colored tights out there getting neglected by girls that like to show their white legs in the dead of winter. They can really add something fun to your outfit, or you can keep it simple and just wear black or brown, that’s fine too. Soon as fall rolls around I cannot wait to wear my tights. One of my favorite looks is shorts with tights. It is always a safe way to go too if you have something real short.

My advice is to keep is classy and sexy at the same time. I personally don’t like to dress with too much showing, and I like to be different. If you’re going out and feel like wearing that tight sexy dress go for it, but no one should be continuously dressing inappropriately. There are so many great fashionable items out there for everyone, utilize them ladies!

My take on OSCAR Fashion

I’m sure most of you watched the oscars, if not you can at least see what people wore and who won all the best awards that you have to wait 4 hours to see. Ok why watch it when you can just look it up on the internet? Who knows, but yes I watched from start to finish with the girls!

We all have our own opinion of fashion, so here are my own fashion awards for the Oscars:

The award for my favorite dress of the night, the dress that I would probably pick for my self goes to….

Emma Stone!! Not only did I absolutely love the help and her in it, I loved his dress! I usually don’t really like red either, but I think a perfect color for the evening and that neckline and corsage detail at the top is amazing. Her hair color and skin tone go beautiful with it too. Not many people can pull of red hair, and I love it on her, straight or curly.

My award for must unflattering dress goes to…

Jennifer Lopez! It just doesn’t do anything for me, not to mention that it makes her hips look even bigger with all the lines. I don’t like the shoulder cut out either, and I don’t care for that neckline on anyone. Were not even gonna start on the malfunction issue either. Seems like she’s done this before too, do something different.

Next up is the unfortunate dress on someone I really like…

Michelle Williams….Not only do I love her but I love this haircut on her. So much that I would almost cut my hair like that, but probably not gonna happen. I like the color on her and I don’t mind the dress, It looks great on her body. I would just take out that extra skirt ruffle with the bow detail. If that was just cut off of there and it was straight down I would love it.

My next award for Best Color goes to…

Viola Davis! Ok I’m irish and of course I would love a green dress, but it is amazing on her skin tone. I am also loving her hair, did not know she wore a wig until I was watching to Oscars with the girls by the way. I just like everything about it and really like it on her.

My next award to most flattering dress on her body goes to…

Octavia Spencer! I just thought that this dress was so flattering on her. For me it did the opposite that J Lo’s did to her. I liked her hair as well. I was also super excited that she won and her speech was so genuine, I was truly happy for her. Loved her in the Help, which was one of the only three nominated movies that I actually watched so of course I thought they were the best!

My next award for the worst color for her skin tone goes to….

Kristen Wiig! This is really unfortunate because I liked bridesmaids and I like her. I actually love the dress and I can see myself wearing this but I think the color really washed her out  and she could of gone for a variety of other color options.

My award for the most innovative look goes to…

Gwyneth Paltrow! This is just so different and looks amazing on her. It is sleek and stands out on her tall thin frame. I just love it!

My final award goes to worst dress ever no one should ever wear this goes to…

(ok I have two)

first up…

Shailene Woodley! The sleeves are about the only thing I like about this dress. The color, the design, and the fabric just look awful. I do not like that circle design at the top and the fabric just look heavy and unflattering.

My other one is…

Judy Greer! The one who always plays the best friend in chick flicks. This dress is just awful, everything about it. I do not like one thing about it. That’s all I have to say about that.

I hope you liked my Oscar fashion awards! Who did you think was the best and worst dressed?

Pay Homage to your Hometown

So I wanted to share a really great brand that my boyfriend and I came across while we were shopping at this “Dose Market” in Chicago. Which as also an amazing discovery on my last visit to Chicago. It’s like a craft fair with delicious foods, homemade fashions, and artsy items. Check it out here:

Dose Market

Ok enough about that (but for real check it out), and onto the brand HOMAGE

When were at the Dose Market they only had their Chicago “aint no sissy town” tee, but they had such a memorable display and they were really nice. Memorable enought for my boyfriend to look up their website the next day. We found out that they had a ton of awesome vintage tees, including some about Detroit.

This is their photo on the about page. It states what they stand for and what they do, plain and simple.

I reads: Homage turns back the clock with shout outs to eclectic moments and personalitites in sports, music, politics and pop culture. From Bruce Lee to Larry Bird, our tees tell stories of triumoh, individualism and hustle, preserving the old school and creating new legacies. Pay Homage.”

Here is one of their Detroit tees:

Ryan Vesler started the brand in 2007. Before that he had attended Ohio University and he would visit local thrift stores, buy interesting items that he found, then sell them on eBay. He got an appreciation for vintage items and decided he wanted to make some tees of his own. WIth some money from credit card and selling on eBay Homage was born.

“What drives me is that I get to tell a story with each Homage product we release.” said Vesler

They have a retail store in Columbus Ohio at 17 Brickel St. and they sell their products on their website.

Check out their website at http://www.Homage.com , and pay Homage!

Fashion Week

To be completely honest I don’t really follow fashion week. I am majoring in fashion marketing and I love a good runway show but I just have never surfed the internet for hours looking at the new collections and picking out the new trends. I will read an occasional article in The New York Time Thursdays Style section that my dad saves for me every week, but that is usually the extent of it. It’s sad I know.

So I decided to check out the website and see what I could find. The collection that really stood out to me was the new L.A.M.B collection by Gwen Stefani. Not only do I think Gwen Stefani is timeless beauty, I love how she designs for herself. She designs what she likes, she is a trend setter and doesn’t even have to try. Check out her new Spring and Fall 2012 looks!

The backdrop for her fall 2012 collection was black and white photos of New York in the 1960′s.

The collection consists of jumpsuits (which happens to be one of my favorite clothing items), shorts with tights (which also is one of my go to looks for fall and winter), some pop of yellow color, sweaters, blazer jackets, and great handbags.

This is one of my personal favorites

SPRING 2012

For her spring 2012 collection has chunky heels, oversized handbags, more jumpsuits, and shows some skin but keeps it classy.

Who is your favorite designer(s) at this years fashion week?

Mint Mania

One of my favorite new trends for spring is MINT! MInt colored dresses, accessories, nail polish, anything goes in mint for spring. The color looks good on every skin tone, and if you don’t feel comfortable wearing a mint dress or mint denim, pick up a clutch to add a fun pop of color to your outfit.

I was at Madewell at Somerset Collection this past weekend and they had the most amazing pair of Mint colored skinnys. I had to try them on of course and they fit great and were very soft. The color looks better in person than in this photo as well.
